Do you know your Alaska History?

When Alaska was bought by the USA from Russia over 150 years ago the US Senate referred to it as a "Sucked Orange" as its popular fur trade seemed to be in decline. That was until the discovery of whales, salmon, gold, and finally oil.

From its original Eskimo residents through the Gold Rush and more recently to the ever increasing cruise trade, Alaska is an exciting land full of history and great activity. From the icy seas of the Bering Strait that freeze and create a temporary bridge between the U.S. and Russia, through to the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in its skies, Alaska boasts much natural beauty.

This beauty extends to its abundant wildlife, including bears, salmon, whales and seals, through to over 400 species of birds, proving it to be an excellent location for animal lovers to spend some time.

The plants and flowers of Alaska are also extremely abundant and diverse owing to Alaska's proximity to Asia and its particular climate, featuring over 1,700 varieties of flowering plants alone.

With its diverse residents including many Inuits, Eskimos and Russian Alaskans, not to mention the descendants of the Gold Rush pioneers, it is a land of rich cultural heritage and tradition. See the Alaska Visitor's map or native people of alaska for further information on the cultural wealth of Alaska.

The Alaska Visitor's Map contain lots of further information on Alaska including such features such as its amazing snowfall of 81.2 feet (24.75 m) through to registering the USA's biggest ever earthquake measuring 8.4-8.6 on the Richter Scale in 1964.
